FileExtension at Computer Glossary

What is it? A File extension is an addition to a file name in a suffix of the form .xxx, where xxx represents a combination of numbers or letters depending on the corresponding application. The file extension allows a files format to be recognized by the operating system in order to be opened with the application it was created by.
